Aquila - Imperium

Like an eagle attacking its prey, Aquila’s Imperium sunk its claws into me.  Aquila’s debut album after two demos has promise. I am not a strong metalcore fan, however Aquila from Canada deserves attention. The guitar work is really good with great soloing and original sound. Anthony Rimac and Matt Shelson really know how to play. Chase Bryant the bass player is very good but gets lost a bit. Without him, I have the feeling their sound would suffer greatly. Even thought the production is done quite well on this release, I get the feeling Matt McGuire the drummer is much better live than on this album. I can’t put my finger on it, but something tells me so.  Mark Arruda on vocals fits this genre very well.  There are a few elevated moments in this release that I really like his vocals and there are parts that are not so liked. This does not take away form the album.

The album starts off with the album title instrumental and then quickly dives into the song “In Our Darkness”. This gets you warmed up for a really great song that is well written and has me listening over and over. “Within These Flames” is an impressive endeavor.  The album gets split up with a short acoustic instrumental then right back at it.  At the beginning of “Never To Awake” they use a bit of female vocals, I would have liked her vocals to return in the song here and there.  I definitely think you can over do this also but maybe once more in the middle perhaps before a solo would have been cool too.

Imperium is a solid self released album and the band deserves to be recognized. With any luck, Aquila will get enough attention with this album and come together to release many more. For metalcore fans, Imperium is a must have.

After successful touring with some wicked bands, making great friends, and playing almost 50 shows in less than a year, Aquila consisting of Mark Arruda (vocals), Matt Mcguire (drums), Anthony Rimac (guitar), Matt Shelson (guitar) and Adam Massicotte (bass) was better than ever and they threw everything they had into their debut album, Imperium. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Glenn Fricker (Bloodshoteye, Woods of Ypres and Face Down) of Spectre Sound Studio in Windsor, Ontario in January of 2009. The 10 track album features improvements from the demos and then adds some juicy new material for the thirsty metal ears looking for a tall glass of badass, hard hitting riff-whiskey. The talent and musical expertise featured on this album speaks for itself, and Aquila has stepped up their game by devoting serious attention not only to the rhythm, riffs and melodies, but to style, variety and songwriting ability. Having conquered Southern Ontario, Aquila is now preparing to assault Quebec and the entire East coast of Canada for a few weeks in July 2009, before heading out to the West coast to explore the opportunities available to bands in B.C. and Alberta. Metal fans, watch the fuck out in a Canadian town near you!!
